Packeteering
...or how I learned to stop ragchewing and love the packet.
WTF Packet?

Packet radio is a digital communication mode that sends data over amateur radio frequencies using a protocol called AX.25. It first gained popularity in the 1980s and 1990s, primarily used for messaging, bulletin boards, and early forms of email. For some time, it faded into reletive obscurity as internet and mobile data access became nearly universal. However, it's been predominantly kept alive by a small but dedicated group of amateur radio operators who appreciate its unique capabilities.

APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) and WinLink are two of the most popular applications of packet radio. And have managed to keep the mode somewhat relevant in the modern amateur radio landscape. APRS is used for real-time location tracking and messaging, while WinLink provides email-like services over radio frequencies.

But lately, traditional packet is making a quiet comeback!

The resurgence is driven by a few key factors:

  • Digital literacy among hams is higher than ever. More operators are comfortable with software, networks, and configuring digital modes.
  • Nostalgic interest in packet radio has grown, especially among older hams who remember the heyday of packet.
  • Young hams are discovering packet radio as a fun and unique mode to explore.
  • Affordable interfaces and open-source software make getting on the air with packet easier and cheaper than in the TNC-only days.
  • Increased interest in resilient, offline-capable communications—especially in emergency comms (EmComm), field operations, and grid-down scenarios—has brought packet back into focus.

Packet radio today can be run entirely in software with nothing more than a VHF/UHF FM radio, a soundcard interface, and a few free programs. It's a practical, functional mode for real-world use, and it's more approachable than it used to be.

If you're comfortable running software on a PC and have access to a basic FM rig, you already have most of what you need to get started.
